Today it’s giraffes. She walked past the lemurs, smiled at the pile of ringtails sleeping in the shade of the grass, then left Madagascar for the African plains. Every day she gets half an hour to circumnavigate the globe, to decide whether she wants to go to Sumatra or the Sudan, Australia or the Arctic Circle. She has her favorites now, the Ringtails, the Sumatran Tigers, the Steller’s Sea Eagles. She doesn’t usually make it as far as the lions. But this is her world now, her reality, and maybe she’ll stay a while. Escape doesn’t seem so promising anymore.
